ABOUT BBBS

Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Big Brothers Big Sisters ensures that the children in its program achieve such measurable outcomes as educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors, higher aspirations, greater confidence and better relationships. This mission has been the cornerstone of the organization’s 112-year history. With over 300 agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves nearly 170,000 children (“Littles”), their families and 170,000 volunteer mentors (“Bigs”).

All over the United States, caring adult volunteers are changing the lives of children in their communities. Evidence shows that our one-to-one relationships make a significant difference in the lives of children. Our average length of a community-based match is 29 months. The longer the match, the greater the impact.

Over the past 10 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has matched more than 2 million children with caring, supportive adult mentors.

The Big Results

  • 87% of youth in our school/site-based programs improve or maintain their grades.
    • A Big Brother or Big Sister who simply takes an hour each week to spend time with their Little can help their Little improve or maintain their grades.
  • When children are matched with a Big in our community-based program, 97% report a significant increase in avoiding risky behaviors.
    • The influence of a Big Brother or Big Sister encourages youth to avoid risky behaviors like smoking, drinking, and abusing drugs.
  • More than 25,000 Littles in the BBBS program in 2015 had a parent who was in jail or prison.
    • Losing a parent to incarceration, even temporarily, can have a huge impact on a child. Having a consistent, supportive adult to spend time with can help a child deal with that loss

It starts with our mission: to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

And vision: that all children achieve success in life.
